AD 1000 The Viking Bjarni Heriulfsson, blown off course sights the coast of

America.
AD 1003 Leif Ericsson, son of Eric the Red, leads an expedition to the west. He
Journeys down the coast of North
America, making several landings and possibly reaching as far as Maryland.
Ethelred II orders the slaughter of all Danish settlers and mercenaries in
Southern England.
AD 1007
Sweyn Forkbeard and an army of Norsemen land in England and wreak
terrible vengeance! (Well, who wouldn’t!!)
AD 1012
The Danes sack Canterbury and are bought off for 48000 pounds of silver.
AD 1013
Sweyn lands in England and is proclaimed King. Ethelred flees to
Normandy.
AD 1014
The English recall Ethelred as King on the death of Sweyn.
AD 1015
Canute invades England, war between the Danes and the Saxons.
AD1016
Edmund Ironside, son of Ethelred II, King of England. He and Canute
divide the kingdom, Canute holds the north, and Edmund holds Wessex. Edmund is
assassinated and Canute becomes King of England (until 1035). At this time Olaf
II is King of Norway (until 1028).
AD 1017
Canute divides England into 4 Earldoms.
AD 1019
Canute marries Emma of Normandy, widow of Ethelred II.
AD 1035
Death of Canute, his possessions are divided. William the bastard son of
Robert le Diable, becomes Duke of Normandy. Harold I, Harefoot, King of England
(until 1042).
AD 1040
Hardicanute, King of England until 1042 when he dies of drink.
AD 1042
Edward the confessor, son of Ethelred II, King of England until 1066.
Power is in the hands of Earl Godwin and his sons.
AD 1046
Harold Haardraada, King of Norway until 1066
AD 1051
Earl Godwin exiled. In 1052 he returns with a fleet and wins back his
power.
AD 1053
Death of Godwin, his son Harold succeeds him as Earl of Wessex.
AD 1055
Harold’s brother Tostig becomes Earl of Northumbria.
AD 1061
Malcolm Canmore, King of Scots, invades Northumberland.
AD 1063
Harold and Tostig Subdue Wales.
AD 1065
Northumbria rebels against Tostig who is exiled.
AD 1066
Harold II is crowned King of England the day after Edward the confessor
dies. Tostig and Harold Haardraada of Norway invade Northern England. Harold II
defeats them at the battle of Stamford Bridge (Yorkshire) mid September, killing
both. William of Normandy lands an invasion fleet on the South coast of England.
Harold II marches his army south and 19 days after the battle of Stamford Bridge
he fights the Normans in the battle of Hastings. William I, the Conqueror first
Norman King of England (until 1087)
AD 1067
Work commences on the Tower of London.
AD 1068
William subdues the North of England (the Harrying of the North):
The region is laid waste.
AD 1070
Hereward the Wake begins a Saxon revolt in the fens of Eastern England.
AD 1072
William invades Scotland and also receives the submission of Hereward.
AD 1086
Canute IV of Denmark is assassinated, the Danish threat to England is
lifted. The Domesday Book is completed.
AD 1087
Wiiliam (Rufus) II King of England (until 1099)
AD 1096
The First Crusade begins.
AD 1100
Henry I King of England (until 1135)
AD 1109
War between England and France (until 1113)
AD 1135
Stephen of Boulogne seizes the English crown on the death of Henry I.
Civil war breaks out.
AD 1141
Matilda captures Stephen at the battle of Lincoln and reigns
disastrously. She is driven out by a popular rising and Stephen is restored.
AD 1154
Henry II King of England (until 1189)
AD 1189 Death of Henry II, Richard I (the Lionheart) King of England.
